The Young Nonprofit Professionals Network (YNPN) National Conference & Leaders Institute, presented by Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, is an annual event that brings together leaders from across the country for three days of networking, professional development, and chapter collaboration. For the past twelve years, the leaders of the national YNPN network have gathered annually to build relationships, learn from each other, and reconnect with YNPN’s vision of strengthening communities by building a diverse and powerful social sector. The 2018 Change in Action Conference is where the most passionate and innovative nonprofit professionals will come to take their careers and leadership to the next level.
What comes to mind when someone says Indianapolis? Our many sporting events? The well-known phrase “there’s more to Indiana than corn?” Our state fair? Indianapolis, Indiana has one of the most robust, nationally-recognized nonprofit communities in the country and the 2018 YNPN conference will showcase that work and the city as a whole. Indy leads the nonprofit sector in academia with the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy (proud presenting sponsor of this year’s conference!) as the only school of its kind in the nation, and the first in the world establishing the study of philanthropy. In addition, the School of Public and Environmental Affairs at IUPUI is consistently lauded as one of the top nonprofit management programs in the country.
This history of philanthropy and spirit of learning runs deep in the community which many national philanthropic and nonprofit efforts call home. Indy is where you will find a large contingent of national nonprofit organizations including multiple fraternal organizations, Kiwanis, the research center for Girls Inc, the National Collegiate Athletic Association as well as nationally renowned local organizations such as the Indianapolis Museum of Art and The Children's Museum of Indianapolis. The social sector as a whole also benefits from Indy’s spirit of learning through Indiana's various social service and management educational institutions and trainers.
Our state is a place with a rich past of discrimination--from our KKK roots to our recent Religious Freedom Restoration Act legislation. However, what doesn't always make national news is our resiliency, the love and kindness we have for our neighbors, and the hoards of people who fight discrimination and inequity every day. It is that fight that we would like to bring to light in our upcoming conference. YNPNindy will ensure a meaningful and transformational experience for everyone involved locally and nationally by challenging assumptions, building skills, and empowering attendees to take action for themselves and their communities.
2018 Host Chapter: YNPNindy
YNPN National is thrilled to be working alongside YNPNindy as the 2018 Host Chapter. It is fitting that YNPNindy should host the 2018 National Conference because the chapter was born out of a visit to Grand Rapids, the host city of the 2011 YNPN National Conference. Five strangers from Indianapolis attended, and from that conference (and the car ride to and from) came the idea to build a YNPN chapter. Those early organizers understood the potential Indianapolis had in fostering a strong nonprofit workforce by forming a network dedicated to the needs of young professionals. They committed to making their idea a reality and YNPNindy was officially formed that very year.
Over the past six years YNPNindy has built a community and made notable accomplishments including:
- Growing from five members to several hundred in just six years (over 100 young professionals attended our local events in 2017)
- Representing Indy on the YNPN national board, with 4 out of 15 board members hailing from Central Indiana
- Hosting quarterly free professional development events covering topics as varied as charting your nonprofit career to basic Excel skills
- Offering biannual Informed Citizen panels on important issues in the Indianapolis community such as food insecurity and homelessness
- Presenting monthly networking events that take place at locally-owned Indianapolis restaurants, fostering stronger connections in our nonprofit community while supporting small businesses in the process
- Recruiting a diverse local board of directors, currently comprised of seven individuals who represent the true breadth of Indianapolis’ nonprofit sector and larger community
Join us as young nonprofit professionals from across the country come to Indy for conversations, connections, and professional development!
